Scientists Fit 75 Pronghorns, Fastest Land Animal in Americas, with GPS Collars: What They Found

A recent study in New Mexico has shed light on the impact of solar farms on pronghorn migration patterns using GPS collars. The findings suggest that it’s not the solar panels themselves causing problems, but rather the fences surrounding them.

The San Juan Solar and Storage Project, a 1,100-acre facility near a retired coal-fired power plant, is at the center of this research. In 2024, scientists fitted 75 female pronghorns with GPS collars to track their movement patterns in unprecedented detail. The results indicate that the fences surrounding the solar facility are disrupting ancient migration routes used by these iconic animals.

Pronghorns, often referred to as the fastest land animal in the Americas, are notoriously difficult to corral due to their tendency to crawl underneath fences rather than jumping over them like deer. This makes the six-foot chain-link fences around solar facilities a significant barrier for pronghorns.

Researchers are not advocating for the abolition of renewable energy projects in favor of fossil fuels; instead, they suggest that small design changes could make a big difference in allowing pronghorns to continue using their traditional migration routes. For example, raising the bottom of fences high enough for these animals to crawl underneath could be a simple yet effective solution.

Previous research has shown similar problems with solar farms and wildlife movement. A 2022 study published in Ecological Solutions and Evidence found that pronghorn activity declined significantly near a solar farm in Wyoming, with effects extending beyond the fenced area itself. It’s clear that more attention needs to be paid to the infrastructure surrounding renewable energy projects.

Considering ecosystem impact when building large-scale infrastructure is crucial. This may require rethinking design priorities: rather than just focusing on efficiency and cost-effectiveness, project planners should also take into account the needs of local wildlife. The pronghorns of New Mexico serve as a reminder that the natural world is inherently complex and unpredictable; by acknowledging this complexity, we may find more effective solutions to our problems.

As researchers continue to collect data on the San Juan Solar project, it’s clear that adaptation will be key.
