The Stubborn Resilience of at-Tuwani’s Palestinians

The recent attack on the village of at-Tuwani in the occupied West Bank serves as a stark reminder of Israel’s entrenched campaign to displace Palestinians from their ancestral lands. On July 18, masked settlers launched a brazen assault that left homes and a mosque ablaze.

At-Tuwani, with its population of over 200 residents, has long been a thorn in the side of Israeli authorities. Located on the cusp of Masafer Yatta, a cluster of Palestinian herding communities in Area C, this village stands as a testament to the ingenuity and determination of those living under occupation.

Sami Huraini, a member of the village council and field researcher documenting settler attacks, notes that the July 18 incident marked a new escalation in violence. However, it is but one thread in a well-woven pattern of Israeli policies designed to drive Palestinians from their land. These include the issuing of demolition orders, confiscation of land, and incursions by settlers and military personnel.

Human rights organizations have extensively documented this behavior, arguing that state policies have created an environment of impunity for settler violence against Palestinians. The lack of accountability and protection afforded to these communities means that attacks can occur with relative frequency.

Israel’s policies extend beyond the physical realm into the sphere of law and planning. Palestinians face insurmountable barriers when attempting to obtain building permits, leaving their homes vulnerable to demolition. This tactic serves not only to displace individuals but also to erase their cultural heritage.

The Firing Zone 918, declared in the 1980s as a military training ground, is a case in point. Former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s comments on the matter reveal a disturbing intent to restrict Palestinian expansion into the area. The consequences of this decision can be seen in the recent expulsion order issued by Israel’s Supreme Court, which cleared the way for the displacement of around 1,000 Palestinians living within the zone.

Over 63 communities have been forcibly displaced across the occupied West Bank since October 2023, with nearly 20 Israeli settlements and outposts springing up in their place. The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports an average of six settler attacks a day, causing casualties or property damage, with upwards of 1,000 incidents documented this year alone.

Despite these daunting statistics, the people of at-Tuwani remain resolute. They have declared that they will not be intimidated by Israeli aggression. As Huraini put it: “This is a strong, stubborn village that always challenges the occupation.”

Their defiance serves as a beacon of hope for other Palestinian communities facing similar struggles. The resilience of at-Tuwani’s residents underscores the importance of recognizing the inherent value and rights of those living under occupation.

It is imperative that the international community acknowledges the root causes of this conflict, rather than simply addressing its symptoms. Israel’s campaign to displace Palestinians from their land must be seen for what it is: a calculated attempt to erase an entire people’s presence and cultural identity.
