Researchers from Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University and the Maharaja Sayajirao University analyzed eight species of barnacles and extracted over 1,000 microplastic particles from seawater, sediments, and the creatures themselves. The findings are striking, given Shivrajpur’s reputation as a pristine beach.

The high levels of microplastic pollution at Shivrajpur can be attributed to poor waste management, indiscriminate dumping of plastic waste, and the area’s geographic vulnerability. Microplastics have been found to be widespread along India’s coastlines, with many previous studies highlighting their devastating impact on marine ecosystems.

Barnacles, it turns out, are biological indicators of coastal pollution and ecosystem health.
